I'm looking forward to this one -- this just in: hello Aussie fans - any of you in the far, far west? I'll be going to Perth next weekend for the go 3 convention. I can't imagine anywhere further away from, well, anywhere, than Perth. Very much looking forward to it, I just need to remember to bring my official Australian English Interpretation Device along - a smallish device about the size of a key fob - you surreptitiously push the button when you hear: "Aw yia, it'd be chokkers" and within seconds a soft spoken voice translates: "Yes, there's gas in the tank". Very handy to have when renting a car..
I'll leave you with an interesting fact: many people say that it rains a lot here in Vancouver. Truth is, as demonstrated by the picture, it may be a lot of rain, but it comes all at once.

ReplyDeleteI eat lunch near that raindrop frequently and the first time I saw it I thought, surely, that's not a ginormous raindrop. Oh but it is! Ha ha, thanks, Vancouver gets a lot of rain. Thanks for the reminder artist!! Your picture looks pretty nifty though - kersploosh!

It seems that you'll go to the opposite side of the earth to get away from the rain, won't you? And wouldn't you know, it's raining cats and dogs outside here in Ohio as I'm reading your post. I would love it if you could find your way here some time. Oh well, here's hoping. In the meantime, have fun down under.

Hey! welcome to Australia! I was JUST in Perth! Too bad I'll be missing you, I'm back in Melbourne :D. Don't worry about the slang, you'll get use to it, especially apparently how fast we all talk.. Although you have worked with Hewlett, so you'll be use to it already!

Greetings! For the first time ever I am very thankful that I live near Perth (which I refer to as the middle of nowhere) and I shall likely be attending GO3. Will you be there for all three days of the convention? If not, which day will you be there? I think I have worked out the public transport system and have convinced my parents to let me go, so I daresay you will be seeing me there. I hope you have a lovely time here, and I look forward to (hopefully) meeting you next weekend! :)

I was a bit upset at how I couldn't make it to see you or Connor at GO3 [a wedding to attend and work] and one of my friends just surprised me with autographs from both of you!!!

I thought I would write you a short note to say a few thank yous for attending the GO3 convention. I caught your Q & A session on the Sunday and appreciated your entertaining efforts in what I thought were some difficult circumstances (noise, venue). I was expecting to see greater numbers but think the convention suffered from lack of advertising and identity crisis(scifi?tech?gaming?). I have attended the more scifi dedicated Supanova convention here in Perth which was quite well attended and received. Great job on the day though, I hope you saw the smiles in the crowd.

Most people from Perth understand that it is an extraordinary long way from anywhere else and you don't get here by accident. I can appreciate the logistics and family issues with traveling so far - thanks for coming. I hope that the city/we treated you well and you had some time outside the convention duties to look around and find something enjoyable more than 'the job'.

Have fun in OZ. Years ago I worked with an Australian woman who was our Japanese specialist. Listening to her talk to people in Japanese with her Aussie accent was really surreal.
