Merry Arctic Inflow

Snow. And again. I've not seen this much in this city for over a dozen years at least. And it's not about to go anywhere. It's going to stay piled up right on top of my car, and then freeze, and then compress with the salt and turn into a sedentary layer of white limestone betraying to future civic paeleontologists the location of that 1/2 inch copper hose coupling I dropped today and could not find anywhere. Burst outdoor piping. Don't ask.
.
I've heard the meteorologists down south repeat the phrase "arctic air coming down from Canada" when this kind of weather blows in. We don't have no 'Canada' to blame up here. Instead the weatherpeople use the ominous "arctic inflow" to describe weather that's meant for Edmonton but somehow ends up getting lost and howls down the coast. And let me tell you "arctic inflow" ain't no appliance manufacturer. It's nasty cold. Above is a picture of the inflow inflowing - on a recent crossing of Hotham sound. That's cold you can see.
.
But it will soon be Christmas. And that's good. So let me take this chance to wish you all a wonderful Christmas, and a healthy, happy, prosperous New Year.
.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

  12. Brrr... that does look cold. Being that I'm the other side of the world it's quite warm here and while I think I prefer cold it's never cold enough here to get snow.

I wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas David!

  13. Holy cow. O_O

On the one hand, that's a rather pretty picture, but on the other, ack! COLDNESS!

But, hey, have a Merry Christmas! Hopefully, you and yours will be able to be nice and toasty warm. *nod*

  14. Ah, yes, burst outdoor plumbing. I don't need to ask, I know. I'm in an RV in the Okanagan where I was told it wouldn't get this nasty. :-)

Thank you for the updates and happy holidays!

  15. Merry Green Christmas from the land of Fruits, Nuts, and Quakes! Although there may be some snow on a mountain down here somewhere - none that I can see at the moment.

Sending virtual homemade eggnog and chocolate fudge (need energy to deal with those outdoor water line breaks!)

  16. Burst pipes. No fun!

Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year's! :)

  17. Merry Xmas from Argentina. We're in summer down here so no snow for me :)

Thanks for 5 great years of Dr Zelenka :)

  18. Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy, Wonderful and Safe New year.

Burst pipes are no fun. We have to take precautions to make sure our indoor pipes don't freeze and we haven't even hit the really cold season yet! *yikes*

'Course we can blame our weather on 'artic air coming in from Canada.'

  19. I'm currently blaming all the rain we've been having on the Antarctic Inflow, if there was such a thing. Just like every other year, it's raining for Christmas in NZ.

But at least that give me an excuse to stay in and watch the family movies on TV. Caught 'Merlin's Apprentice' this afternoon. Good times!

Have a happy and safe holiday, and the best of luck for the New Year. :)

  20. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas David!

Its absolutely freezing here in northern Alberta, the words "day time high" and "-30C" shouldn't be allowed in the same sentence.

A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family!

Sending you virtual hot chocolate with mini marshmallows from snowy NY!

  22. Speaking on behalf of Edmonton, you can keep it! We have enough of our own, tyvm, with windchills down to -40 in spots we really don't need any of yours joining it.

    But merry merry anyway. :-)

  23. Merry Christmas!

Sometimes I think I'm the only person who actually LIKES it when it snows (after all, snow is the only excuse that Mother Nature has for making it so FREAKIN COLD!). :)

Hope your holiday is joyful, and all the best in the new year!

  24. And a Merry Christmas to you!

If it's any consolation, it's even colder in Edmonton. So I guess this time it found Edmonton and still had enough stamina left over to make the long trek down the coast.

Anyway, I laughed out loud at your description. Thanks! :)

  25. Well, here in Oregon they're calling it an Alaskan air mass. I wrote Gov. Palin a note requesting she not let her air masses wander around unattended, and that she remove it and its droppings immediately.

  26. Merry Christmas David. Snowing here in Toronto been snowing for hours and lucky me I get to shovel in the morning.

  35. Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and all that jazz.

Murr. I feel you on the snow. Way too much around here for my liking. I'll admit, for Christmas it's fine, but once the holiday is done I want it gone. D:

  36. Merry Christmas! I'm glad to hear you're doing well, despite having a frozen car.

And I've heard some suggestions that the US build a wall between us and Canada to keep the cold weather out. Darn that Arctic inflow, anyway.

  37. Pozdě, ale přece.

Přeji ti krásné svátky, šťastný Nový (i nový) rok. A hlavně zdraví.

  38. i use to live in Alaska and thought it funny to hear that lower 48 weatherman and those from Canada blame Alaska for their cold spell. In Alaska, the weather people always reported the cold coming from...you got it, Russia!! it seems that cold weather never is created anywhere! its always comes from somewhere else.

  39. Merry Christmas!

Sorry to hear it's so cold there. It didn't feel too much like Christmas here. I wore shorts all day! It was 80'F here.

I miss the snow and cold weather... well at least at Christmas. The rest of the time I don't mind it being nice and warm. :)

    Merry Belated Christmas!
    I hope yours went well.
And I feel you on the cold. First it was snowy and cold then it warms into slush and then froze into ice. Let's just hope you don'y have to face that too -_-

  46. Hi David!
Yup I think last week we were having our own version of Arctic Inflow here in Tucson, AZ.

I walk into the Univ. of Arizona Library at 8am it was 55F(23C) and I left 4 hours later and no lie it was 32F(0C) in 4 hours! The freezing rain did not help either!

Hope you had a great Christmas and You have a wonderful New Years as well! I know I will! It's my Birthday! YUp born 01.01.1977 so it's the 3-2 for me lol

  50. NYKL SAVES FROZEN FAMILY ON INTERSTATE: Family of 3, me, husband and 12 year old Emma, trapped at night on black-ice covered Kentucky insterstate 71 which has been closed down for three hours - engines off, pitch black, temps dropping, 12 year old panicking in the dark...I pull out the Nykl Stargate audio CD I'd hidden away and played it - the 12 year old Emma (and her mother)glom on to the story like a lifeline - as we sit under blankets munching Christmas cookies as the hours pass, Emma repeatedly says "Just don't turn off Dr. Zelenka. As long as I can hear him, I'm fine." An 18 hour trip from New York later, we were safely in Louisville. Nykl saves the day. Possibly the planet. I'll put the scene in my next book (www.codykimmel.com). Most earnest thanks from the unwillingly ice-bound Kimmel family.

  52. Enemy at the Gate was great tonight! You guys all did a fantastic job. Atlantis will really be missed! Hope we hear more about the movie soon!

Nice that Zelenka had the idea that was key to saving Earth!
